OK. What you want to do is convince them that tarot cards are not what they think they are and that you want to use them in a different way than they would expect. It’s a crafty strategy but I think might work.

Head over to your local library and if you are lucky, they may be able to get hold of a copy of The Game of Tarot by Michael Dummett (Duckworth 1980). With this well researched history book, you will be able to demonstrate that not only were tarot cards originally created for playing card games but that the images are not occult in origin at all and that the games are still played throughout continental Europe today. The book contains rules for a great many of them!

If you cannot get this, then try to get either:

The Penguin Encyclopedia of Card Games by David Parlett
The Penguin Book of Card Games by David Parlett (2008 edition)

While these (two editions of the same book) contain only a little history, they do include the rules to half a dozen of the games.

Now you will be in a position to convince your parents that a) tarot cards are not occult and that b) you want a pack to explore some of the most strategically sophisticated card games ever devised.

Your next step will be ensure that they buy you the correct pack – keep in mind that most tarot games are played with a French suited pack with trumps that you won’t recognize. So, you need to point out that if you have an Italian suited pack (which is the type of tarot you are thinking of), then you will be able to play more of the Italian and Swiss games. (sneaky but true!)

Ask for the Tarocco Piedmontese or the Ancient Italian Tarots (published by Lo Scarabeo) or the Swiss 1JJ (you will want the French titled import).

You can direct them to these two sites to make the purchase which will also support your claim to want to play games:

if you’re in Europe:

if you’re in the States:

Good luck!

51 card pickup. (or however many cards there are in Tarot minus 1 card)

Answer by Toxic rose is a basket case
First I would keep the cards in a box, where you know they are. Ask your mom how long has that card been missing. If it has been for a long time then ask her how she used the tarot without it. Also, you might want to have your own deck.

Personally, I would draw a new card using a piece of bristol board to replace the one that is missing.

I had my fortune read with tarot cards and I don’t know the meaning?
I had my fortune read with tarot cards, but I didn’t stick around for the meaning. I got the death card, the hanged man card and the high priestess card. Does anyone know what this fortune means?

Answer by Zane A
i can tell you right away without knowing the tarot cards that it means you will die at a middle age by the hands of a woman. not violently but it will be sudden and you will not be able to see it comming nor stop it.

Answer by Mystie010
The best place to find out the meaning of each card is here:

I can’t find how to make the correct page’s link live, but if you look up tarot meanings there you will find out the meaning of each card. What I can tell you briefly is that the the cards mean the following:

Death Card – The end of an old cycle or stage in your life and the beginning of a new one.

Hanged Man – This means you have flexibility of mind and you can adapt to changes.

High Priestess – Well-being, wealth, security and love.

Therefore my take on these cards would be that you have just undergone some major changes, but you are adapting really well to these changes in your circumstances and the changes will bring forth good things for you. So no worries there! But if you want to know more please do check out the cards meanings at

ZANE A, shame on you for giving that answer. No one knows when someone will die except God and to frighten someone in that way is totally unethical. I hope it will be disregarded as it should be. You give decent and ethical readers a bad name and scare people away from having a reading.

I have already answered this question in another area. There can’t be two people asking about the same three cards in a reading at the same time.

  1. Scud The Disposable Assassin says

Personally, I would make your Mom a Shadow box out of the cards…just to show her that you love her…

BTW, a damaged or incomplete deck is useless…

  2. gjmb1960 says

you should go out into the world and find the missing card?
we all should find our missing card?
what is the color of your missing card?
    is it a red heart?
    or the black queen?
    hmm ?

  3. Enchanted Gypsy says

Replace it. Ask your mom if she knew a card was missing and if she did, ask what happened to it. Use the cards in craft projects where you might use a greeting card.
