What is a good deck of tarot cards for beginners?
I am giving it as a gift to a friend and I am clueless as to
which tarot deck for beginners would be good. Preferably around $ 25

Answer by Cthulhu
I would buy something useful instead, like some classy beer. Tarot cards are bullshit.

The Rider-Waite tarot is the best for beginners. This one is very nice, comes with a box and a booklet that explains how to do a reading and it also has the original illustrations: http://www.amazon.com/Original-Rider-Waite-Tarot-Pack/dp/0880796863

I collect them and that’s the first deck I got. Although now I find the Crowley Thoth tarot more interesting. I also have Tarot for Cats which is really cute but unfortunately out of print now.

I’m with the other guy, $ 25 is better spent on beer.

Does the meaning of some tarot cards change according to the deck?
I’ve noticed that the pictures of the cards change from a deck to another, but does the meaning change too?

Answer by ChainLightnin’ ⅜
They are just playing cards dealt at random. There really is a card game call Tarots. The fortune telling part did not start until the early twentieth century.

Tarot cards uses symbolism to portray meaning (based upon the universal meanings of symbols and archetypes). The artwork on cards are open to interpretation and so are the meanings of the cards. Using intuition instead of textbook meanings, in my opinion, is even better. Although i know quite a few people would disagree with me (It’s limiting and it isn’t always best to give the same answer to different questions). Like to say if a card gives you a sensation of sadness, but you look it up in the book and its suppose to symbolize rewards. According to the question, it sometimes just doesn’t make sense.. and I feel that it can make you doubt your intuition, and give the wrong advice.
But to answer your question short and sweet, no, the textbook meaning of the card doesn’t change from deck to deck.

How to use Tarot cards?
I’ve really gotten into the tarot cards, can someone explain a bit more about how they work, and the steps on how to deal the cards to pick them for your past future and other settings. Thanks.
Oh and does this contact dead or show certain things about dead people?

Answer by Something or Other
Depends on the Deck, depends on the interpretation. Some decks are more specific in certain areas than others. Some formats have prelayed interpretations, for example the first card placed on the table relates to work, the second love, the third personal growth, etc. Depending on the style of tarot depends on how you deal them. As for contacting the dead, no, tarot is a tool for intuition, like the I Ching.

There are so many variables when it comes to tarot.
To tell it all would take a volume of books.
Everyone has different way or relationship with the cards which comes with time and experience.
There are thousands of different spreads as well. Which ones you use depends upon what ones you like, or what spread might seem better than another in regards to the question being asked.
Laying out the cards for a spread is another thing that is really up to you.
Everyone has a different way to do it. Some like to shuffle three times and then cut the deck into three piles then pulling the top card off each pile. Some people just cut the deck once after shuffling.
Contacting the dead or to show things about them is no different than asking any other question.

Hello

Oh that first deck – remember it well!

To explain them is a long task, I run a tarot course that goes worldwide, but I also have an online forum for tarot students of all stages.

The forum is free & you can ask questions as they arise, practice & have fun. See link below.

I don’t believe there is a right or wrong way to use them. I prefer to play card games with Tarot cards. I also don’t believe the cards have the ability to predict the future or contact the dead. The cards were originally intended for a card game similar to modern bridge. Tarot card games are still played today in continental Europe. Tarot cards would not be used for predicting futures until long after the creation of the deck.

As far as I’m concerned, they are all the same, just different pictures, this doesn’t affect how they are used.

I would recommend you go with their stance, like if they are Pagan, find a Pagan deck, if they are an Occultist, I would recommend and Aleister Crowley deck!

Edit: Ich Hab- Ah, his Thoth deck, I was looking at those yesterday morning:

    http://www.amazon.com/Thoth-Tarot-Deck-Aleister-Crowley/dp/1572815108/ref=sr_1_1?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285574850&sr=8-1

Edit 2: John S- That is what I said, and I got thumbed down! What an ignoramus!

Edit 3: I just noticed, not only does it have the four Alchemical symbols for the four elements, above fire and water, it has the Alchemical symbol for the planet Jupiter (looks like a 4, with a 2 forged into the left tine of the 4) on the front cover!

There are many different images in the tarot. I use the Aquarian Tarot, but look for the deck which you think fits your friend. Use your intuition.

Look at it as a gift to the person not a beginner as sets are not really defined as beginner or advanced, and they will probably work better with a set that reflects them rather than one that looks more simplistic, go have a look see what are in the store and when a set jumps out and you think ‘that is so her/him’ get them. If all else fails go with the rider waite they are a classic.

I always tell people to pick out a deck they are drawn to but since this is a gift you can go about this a few different ways.
The Rider-Waite Deck is the most standard deck and is good for beginners. You could also choose a deck that looks like that person would like. OR you could look for decks that come in a set. A set will be the deck with a book – this is good for beginners because the book usually goes into deeper meanings and more instructions rather than just the little booklet that comes with most decks. Sets are usually around the $ 25 and most decks are under that price.

In my experience, the Tarot is a tool for channeling Divine influence and combining it with intuition and one’s ability to interpret.

How you “deal” or lay out the cards is called a spread. There are literally thousands of spreads to choose from. Some are good for certain concerns or questions, some are very general, and some are best used at certain times of the year.

I don’t believe that divination in any form connects us to “the dead.” Any spiritual practice is potentially a link between the spirit world (God and any lesser spirits in whom you may believe, such as angels or the Fey). But the goal of divination is to provide support to the person being read, not to have a conversation. That can be done by praying.

I recommend buying (or borrowing) as many books as possible, talking to your community’s reader(s), and putting a lot of practice into it. Tarot is complex, and each reader has his/her own style and preferences. Good luck on your journey. I hope you find fulfillment in it.
